The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "Yuj" meaning to yoke, join or unite. This implies joining

or integrating all aspects of the individual - body with mind and mind with soul - to achieve a happy, balanced useful life, and spiritually, uniting the individual with the supreme. Deep within everyone there is an abiding faith in a Supreme Being, someone to whom we can look up for help and guidance, for protection and inspiration.

 

Yoga is therefore a spiritual quest. However, along the path of yoga, you will also gain health, happiness, tranquility and knowledge. This is the hypothesis of the Yoga.

 

2500 years ago, Indian sage Patanjali Maharishi formulated the science of yoga into a definite system of “eight limbs”.  Patanjali describes obstacles to meditation, and the way to acquire peace of mind by developing certain virtues.  The eight limbs are more precisely viewed as eight levels of progress, each level providing benefit in and of itself and also laying the foundation for the higher levels. 

 

The eight limbs are: Yama and Niyama, which are ethical obligations; Asana, which is the postures; Pranayama, which is breath control; Pratyahara, which is sense withdrawal; Dharana, which is concentration; Dhyana, which is meditation; and Samadhi, experience of unity with God.

 

Zazen Yoga® is the physical practice of the asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath) as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to prepare the body for meditation and maintain an optimal quality of life.
